Exchange 2016 and 2019 End of Support

As we close off 2024 it is a good time to remind ourselves when Exchange 2016 and Exchange 2019 support ends. Microsoft have a date of October 14th 2025 for support ending for both Exchange 2016 and Exchange 2019.

Microsoft recommend moving to the new Exchange version – Exchange Server Subscription Edition (SE). Exchange Server SE is not yet available, but is expected in early 2025.

The Microsoft roadmap provides advice for any Exchange 2016 servers in use to upgrade these with Exchange 2019 first. Then to upgrade the Exchange 2019 servers to Exchange SE after that.

Microsoft provide further details on the path for Exchange Server SE. There will be Exchange Server SE RTM first, followed by Exchange Server SE CU1. The general guidance from Microsoft is to move to Exchange Online, however this is not possible for many organizations. Please get in touch for consulting help to plan for the end of support for Exchange 2016 and Exchange 2019. There have been increasing cyber threats to Exchange Server over the last few years, so we advise ensuring a continued up to date cyber defense for Exchange Server after October 2025.

Exchange 2019 CU15 is due out in early 2025 and has some important features:

  • No more support for Exchange 2013
  • TLS 1.3 Support
  • Support for Windows 2025 Operation System.
